"Ban Phra Phuum" [spirit house]

They weren't bird houses at all but spirit houses. Thais may pray to guardian property spirits, which are displaced when the house is built. Thais burn incense and leave food, flowers, and small statues in the spirit house in return for a wish or favor granted. This is not from Buddhism, but is left over from the older Hindu Brahmanism.
